Norwegian-controlled tanker fleet

According to statistics from the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, at the beginning of October 2016, Norwegian owners controlled a total of 360 internationally trading tankers (comprising 229 chemical tankers, 62 shuttle tankers and 69 tankers of other types, mainly crude tankers), with an aggregate capacity of 20.5 million dwt. Of these, just two shuttle tankers were under the domestic Norwegian flag, with another 153 on the Norwegian international register, NIS, while 205 were flying foreign flags.

Norwegian owners had a total of 23 tankers on order, totalling 1.6 million dwt. Of these newbuilds, 16 were chemical tankers, four shuttle tankers and three other types. Fifteen of these newbuilds are due to sail under the NIS register, and the other eight on various foreign registers.
